Number of Covid-19 Cases in Brazil Exceeds 510,000; Deaths Pass 29,000 (May 31st)
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil reached 514,849 cases of the novel coronavirus, more than half a million people infected with the disease, with the addition of 16,409 new cases to the statistics during the previous 24 hours.

With 480 deaths recorded in the same 24 hour period, the official number of Covid-19 deaths now amounts to 29,314. The numbers were updated early Sunday evening, May 31st, by the Ministry of Health.
Of the total confirmed cases, 278,980 (54.2 percent) are under follow-up and 206,555 patients (40.1 percent) have recovered. There are still 4,208 deaths under investigation to determine whether they were caused by Covid-19.
São Paulo remains the epicenter of the pandemic in the country, accounting for the highest number of deaths: 7,615. The state is followed in number of deaths by Rio de Janeiro (5,344), Ceará (3,010), Pará (2,923), and Pernambuco (2,807).
Nextm in descending order, come Amazonas (2,052), Maranhão (955), Bahia (667), Espírito Santo (604), Alagoas (443), Paraíba (360), Rio Grande do Norte (305), Minas Gerais (271), Rio Grande do Sul (224), Amapá (222), Paraná (182), Federal District (170), Piauí (161), Sergipe (158), Rondônia (156), Santa Catarina (136), Acre (148), Goiás (124), Roraima (116), Tocantins (73), Mato Grosso (61) and Mato Grosso do Sul (20).
In terms of the number of confirmed cases, São Paulo (109,698), Rio de Janeiro (53,388), Ceará (48,489), Amazonas (41,378), and Pará (37,961) rank top of the list. Among the federation units with the highest number of infected people are Maranhão (34,639), Pernambuco (34,450), Bahia (18,392), Espírito Santo (13,690), and Paraíba (13,162).
Brazil ranks second in the world in number of infected people (514,000), behind the United States, with more than 1.7 million cases, according to a report published by Johns Hopkins University, which collects official country figures. In terms of the number of deaths, Brazil ranks fourth behind the United States (104,319), the United Kingdom (38,571), and Italy (33,415).
