PAHO warns about fake Covid vaccines in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The deputy director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Jarbas Barbosa, warned on Wednesday (21) about the supply of fake covid vaccines in Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico, denouncing a “problem” for health and police authorities.

Asked about a report by The Wall Street Journal about the sale of fraudulent vaccines from the Pfizer lab in Mexico, Barbosa said, “Yes, we have received information from Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil that some doses have been offered on social networks.”

“The illegal markets are offering vaccines that are probably counterfeit, not the real vaccine, or maybe they are stealing them from a health center, and no one can guarantee that they are stored correctly,” Barbosa said at a press conference.

“So clearly it’s a problem, not only for the health authorities but also for the police to identify this criminal activity,” he said.

Barbosa insisted that only vaccines administered by health authorities can be trusted because only those are guaranteed to be “safe and effective” and kept properly.

“Therefore, it is essential to reject buying any vaccine that is offered on social networks and the internet,” he urged.

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that Pfizer is investigating Mexican authorities’ administration of fake anti-covid vaccines in Mexico.

The newspaper said the United States, Mexico, and other countries have detected “dozens of websites” claiming to sell doses from Pfizer and the U.S. lab Moderna fraudulently.
