Paraná Prosecutor’s Office Charges Doctor Who Attended Patients While Infected
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Paraná state Prosecutor’s Office (MPPR) filed charges against a doctor in the town of Colombo, in the metropolitan region of the capital city Curitiba, who was working despite knowing he was infected with the coronavirus.
The affair occurred in mid-April in an Emergency Assistance Unit. According to the denunciation, the doctor attended at least nine patients during his shift. At the end of the day, he told his colleagues he needed a certificate because he was infected with Covid-19.

“Even though he already had a certificate issued days before to excuse his absence from another job at a health center in Itapoá, on the Santa Catarina state coast,” the Prosecutor’s Office says.
The denunciation originated from city hall itself, which opened a Disciplinary Administrative Proceeding. In addition, it removed the medical professional for 90 days. In a note, the city hall further reported that it had referred the case to the Regional Council of Medicine.
The doctor was indicted for a crime against the national public emergency as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The penalty may be imprisonment and a fine.
“Freely and knowingly, aware of the illegality and reproachability of his behavior, he violated the public authorities’ guidelines to prevent the spread of a contagious disease,” says the Prosecutor’s Office’s denunciation.
The city, with 212,000 inhabitants, records 70 confirmed cases and no deaths by Covid-19, according to the latest report released by the city government on Tuesday, June 2nd.
