Criminals Break Into Galeão Airport Cargo Terminal in Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The criminals arrived at the scene at approximately 10 AM, October 19th, according to the terminal’s video cameras.

According to officials heard by the Civil Police, the gang’s weapons were hidden inside the two cars. In a statement, Riogaleão, the concessionaire that manages the airport, denies that the criminals took cargo from inside the Latam terminal, contrary to what the State Police reported.

“The domestic cargo terminal of Latam airline, located in Riogaleão Cargo, experienced an attempted robbery on Saturday morning, October 19th. The terminal’s security team thwarted the criminals’ efforts, who failed to carry the intended cargo,” said the concessionaire.

The Rio State Police, however, do not confirm that the action has been thwarted. According to them, police officers of the 17th precinct, in charge of Ilha do Governador, were deployed to confirm the occurrence at the airport.

When they arrived, they were told that criminals in vehicles had gained access to the cargo terminal and had committed robbery, then fled.

Police searched the area, but no arrests have been made so far. According to the Cargo Theft and Robbery Police (DRFC), the case has been registered and the investigation is ongoing.

Testimony is being taken, and the investigations are being conducted by the specialized police division.

In a note of only one line, Latam Cargo Brazil reported: “that it is cooperating with the officials in charge of the investigations”.

In the statement, the airline does not report whether the criminals stole the cargo or how they accessed the terminal.
