Man almost has his leg torn off by shark in Brazil’s northeastern city of Recife
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The beachgoers of Piedade, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Recife, experienced a big scare this Sunday morning (25). A 32-year-old man suffered a shark attack while swimming in the sea, according to information from G1.
The victim had injuries on the back of the left thigh and buttocks and was treated shortly after the accident.
In the area known as Igrejinha de Piedade, 13 other cases of animal attacks have been recorded. This is the second shark attack in the same location in 15 days.
On July 10, a 51-year-old man died after a shark incident at the same beach location. The swimmer had a torn hand and a deep injury to his thigh. He was taken to the hospital but died.
FREQUENT ACCIDENTS IN THE REGION
Since 1992, when attacks began to be recorded on the Pernambuco coast, 66 incidents involving sharks have been reported. The data come from the State Surveillance Committee (Cemit). There were a total of 26 fatalities during this period.
Of five reported shark attacks in Pernambuco, one occurred in the area. Of the other 13 people attacked in this location, 12 were bathers, and one, a surfer. Seven have died.
In order to avoid incidents with sharks, various marine activities have been banned in higher-risk areas since 1999. Among them, surfing and bodyboarding.
