Now, states and the Federal District will have until January 31st, 2020 to adapt to the new standard, which will no longer be mandatory for transfers of vehicle ownership, as was previously required. Another new feature is simpler look.

The new model will only be required for new vehicles (first license plate), or existing vehicles moving between cities or states, or if the plates were stolen and/or damaged.

This is the sixth time that the new plating procedure has been deferred. The period previously established by Contran would expire on Sunday, June 30th. Moreover, this is the second time that plates have gone through a change in layout.

Currently, the new model is already in approximately two million vehicles and in force in seven Brazilian states: Amazonas, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, and Rio Grande do Sul.

Those currently in circulation using the Mercosur standard are not required to change to the redesigned plates. For the above states, two months have been granted for adjustment.
