Meteor Shower Will be Observed in Brazil at Dawn on Tuesday, July 30th

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Southern Delta Aquariid meteor shower, which occurs until August 23rd, will peak at dawn on Tuesday, July 30th, and will be visible all across Brazil. The phenomenon may produce up to 25 meteors per hour and will be best observed between 2 and 4 AM. The moon phase is conducive to observation with the naked eye as its glow should not overshadow the meteors, according to the Exoss Citizen Science Institute.

The Southern Delta Aquariid is an intense meteor shower that happens periodically and is best observed in the southern hemisphere. Viewing the phenomenon carries no risks.

Observers will be able to view meteors in the sky, which rain down on earth like fire, producing spectacular streaks of light across the night sky. Furthermore, it is possible to observe the trails left by the meteors, known as “shooting stars” forming swift luminous streaks in the sky.

The Exoss Citizen Science Institute is a non-profit organization that seeks to study meteors and bolides, their origins and characteristics. Astronomers and amateurs take part in the group’s observations. Partners include the American Meteorological Society and the International Meteorological Organization.

How to observe meteors

To observe a meteor shower, you need to find a dark spot. Most meteorites are too faint to be seen in cities, and only a few are bright enough. Allowing your eyes to adjust to the darkness for thirty minutes will give you a better chance at spotting them. The farther away you are from city lights, the better the chance you have of seeing these meteors.

As you will need to be watching the sky at all times, it is advisable to do it lying down or on a lounge chair to prevent a sore neck. Look toward the northeast — although the meteors will cross a large portion of the sky.
