Need a job? 2021 demographic census opens over 204,000 positions in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – There are 181,898 positions for census takers, which requires elementary education level, and 22,409 for census agents, requiring high-school; pay is up to R$2.100 (US390).

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) has reopened the awaited call for 204,307 temporary positions for the 2021 Demographic Census. The calls were published this Thursday, February 18th, in the Federal Gazette.

There are two selection processes and positions are spread across virtually every municipality in Brazil. The distribution of job openings and salaries is below:

181,898 vacancies for census taker positions: production-based pay, according to the number of households visited and questionnaires answered.
5,450 vacancies for the position of Municipal Census Agent: salary of R$2,100.
16,959 vacancies for the position of Supervising Census Agent: salary of R$1,700

For the census taker position, full elementary education is required. The contract duration is up to 3 months, and may be extended as required to complete the Census activities and budget availability. Contract renewals or terminations will also depend on the collection schedule and on the evaluation results of the hired worker’s performance. The workload consists of a minimum of 25 hours per week.

For the positions of census agent, complete high-school education is required. The workload consists of 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day. The best placed candidates in each municipality will fill the position of municipal census agent, who will be responsible for coordinating the collection in that city. The rest will supervise the census takers’ teams. The contract duration is expected to be up to 5 months, and may be extended.

Vacancies are spread across 3,929 municipalities in Brazil for census agents and 5,297 cities for census takers.

According to the IBGE, objective tests will be held in person on April 18th for municipal census agent and census agent supervisor. For census takers, tests will also be held in person, on April 25th, “according to Covid-19 prevention protocols”.

This date gap enables candidates to take part in both selection processes. Tests will be held in all municipalities where positions are available.

Tests for municipal census agent and supervisory census agent positions are objective, 4 hours in duration, held in the afternoon, and include:
10 questions on Portuguese
10 questions on Quantitative Logic Reasoning
5 questions on ethics in public service
15 questions on Notions of Administration/Managerial Situations
20 questions on technical knowledge.

The test for census takers is similarly objective:
4 hours duration, held in the afternoon
10 questions on Portuguese
10 Mathematics questions
5 questions on Ethics in Public Service
25 questions on technical knowledge

Preliminary scores will be released the day following the tests on the Cebraspe website. The final results on approved candidates will be announced on May 27th.

Recruitment is scheduled for May 31st for census agents, and in July for census takers.

The authorized selection process has fewer vacancies than the last one, which was canceled because of the pandemic. Launched in March last year, the call for applications included 208,695 positions and was expected to receive almost 2 million applications.
