Street Dwellers in Barueri, SP Die after Allegedly Poisoned Drink Intake

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Five people died in Barueri, Greater São Paulo, after drinking an alcoholic beverage offered by a stranger. It is suspected that they were all poisoned.

Of the five victims, three were street dwellers. Four died on Saturday and the fifth victim had his death confirmed on Sunday morning. Three other people also felt ill when ingesting the liquid and were referred to the city emergency room.

In a note, the Municipality of Barueri reported that one of the victims said he was given a drink when he was in Cracolândia, central region of São Paulo, and offered it to the others. Cracolândia is 25 km from where the residents began to feel sick. The Civil Police seized the bottle and requested forensic expertise.

According to the municipality, eight people were admitted to the Barueri Central Emergency Room with symptoms of poisoning. Edson Sampaio, 40, Luiz Pereira da Silva, 49, Marlon Alves Gonçalves, 39, and Denis da Silva died on Saturday morning. Renilton Ribeiro Freitas, 43 years old, died on Sunday.

Two street dwellers, a man and a woman who were in the same group, are still hospitalized in the Municipal Hospital in Barueri. Another of the survivors from the group is still hospitalized in the city’s emergency room.

The case was recorded as a suspicious death by the Central Precinct of Barueri, in charge of investigations.
