Agriculture and cattle ranching in Brazil posts highest job generation in Q1 since 2007

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In the first quarter of 2021, the agriculture and cattle-raising sector generated a positive balance of 60,575 new jobs, the best result for the period since 2007, when 62,245 new jobs were created.

The analysis is part of the Technical Note issued by the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA) and was based on data from the General Registry of Employed and Unemployed (CAGED), released April 29 by the Ministry of Economy.

According to CNA, jobs were created in virtually all regions in January, February and March this year.

The Southeast (44,477) and Midwest (11,668) created the most jobs in the period. The exception was the Northeast, which closed 7,530 jobs.

São Paulo led job creation in the first 3 months of 2021, with 36,146 new openings, representing 59.7% of the total in the sector. Next comes Minas Gerais, with 7,467 openings (12.3% of the total).

In the Northeast, Bahia was the only state to register a positive balance: 3,085 openings (5.1% of the total).

By farming activity, the 3 main job creators were soybean farming (12,656), permanent fruit crops except for oranges (10,722), and cattle raising (9,782). Altogether, these crops accounted for 54.7% of the total.
