Car Accident Leaves Five Dead on “Yellow Line” Tollway in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A car with eight youths crashed into a wall in the North Zone of Rio in the early hours of Sunday, December 8th. Five died on the spot.

The accident occurred at approximately 6 AM at the Yellow Line’s Exit 2. The group was returning from a party in Barra da Tijuca and heading for Méier, but crashed on Ramiro Magalhães Street.

The other three injured passengers were rushed to Hospital Salgado Filho, in Méier, and were discharged in the morning.

Alex, 20 years old, the driver;
Guilherme Moreira, 20 years old;
Italo Ribeiro, 21 years old;
Juan Carlos, 24 years old;
Taisa Castro, 21 years old.

Wounded

Douglas Silva, 21;
Juliana Oliveira, 25 years old;
Tamires Carneiro, 20 years old.

‘Everyone was drunk’

Tamires says that she and her boyfriend, his brother and friends had gone to a party at Espaço Hall, formerly Barra Music, on Ayrton Senna Avenue.

“We had money, we could have sent for an Uber, a 99, a taxi, anything, to go home. But his brother was there, and he didn’t want to leave his brother behind… so we went,” she continued.

“But on a bend, the boy was showing off. We told him not to speed up. He sped up the car, he turned the bend, he hit the brakes. Two lost their heads, the rest died, only me and two others survived”, she said, crying.
