RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – With less than a month to go until Carnival, the average number of confirmed reservations for the period at Rio de Janeiro’s hotels has reached 78.4 percent, an increase of more than four percentage points over last year’s 74 percent.

According to a survey by the Rio de Janeiro‘s Lodging Facilities Union (Hotéis Rio), the most popular neighborhoods are Flamengo and Botafogo, with 89 percent of all rooms booked. Next are Barra da Tijuca and São Conrado, with 82 percent; downtown, with 81 percent; Leme and Copacabana, 72 percent; and Ipanema and Leblon, with 71 percent.
The survey shows that most tourists come from São Paulo State, followed by Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, and the Federal District. Among foreign tourists, Argentineans are in the lead, while North Americans, Italians, and French come in second, third, and fourth places, respectively.
The ‘Hotéis Rio’ survey also shows that in the period between New Year’s Eve and Carnival, the city of Rio de Janeiro has 82 percent of its rooms booked. Last year, over the same period, the rate reached 79.6 percent.
