Delta variant already accounts for 45% of Covid cases in Rio de Janeiro

According to the Health Secretariat, the most contagious strain of the coronavirus has already been identified in 38 of the state's 92 municipalities

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - In a period of only ten days, the Covid-19 genomic surveillance program of the State Health Secretariat (SES) has detected an increase of more than 50% in the percentage of patients with the Delta variant, considered by experts to be more contagious.

In the latest bulletin, published July 23, Delta accounted for 16.62% of cases, and 78.36% were of the Gamma variant. In the analysis published Tuesday (3) by the secretariat, the figures increased to 26.09% and 66.58%, respectively.
