Copacabana Hosts the 24th Rio LGBT Pride Parade Today

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Copacabana neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro, is hosting the 24th LGBT Pride Parade this Sunday, September 22nd. The light drizzle that falls on the city did not prevent the concentration for the event from starting around 11 AM at ‘Posto 5’ on Avenida Atlântica.

This year’s theme will be “For democracy, freedom, and rights: yesterday, today and always” and will refer to the 40 years of the LGBT movement in Brazil. The organizers expect to receive 500,000 people. In total, there will be seven musical floats and dozens of artistic and cultural attractions.

Traffic and parking

Only local residents will be allowed to access the are of the parade by car.
The release of traffic along the entire length of Avenida Atlântica will only happen after the event, at 8 PM. Until 11 PM, cars and motorcycles will not be allowed to park in some streets of Copacabana. In some sections, the parking of vehicles will not be allowed until 9 AM on Monday, September 23rd.

The City Hall also informed that the event will not have parking areas and therefore recommends the use of public transportation.

Health

Rio’s Municipal Health Secretariat will set up a tent in Copacabana during the event. Activities began at 9 AM. Guidelines on Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs); Hepatitis B vaccination; distribution of 100,000 educational leaflets; 30,000 male condoms; 5,000 female condoms; and 30,000 packages of lubricant will be offered.

Social Assistance and Human Rights

The Municipal Secretariat of Social Assistance and Human Rights will also be at the event. The agency will distribute information material and support for the identification and referral of cases of children and adolescents in situations of child labor, unaccompanied by those responsible, or in vulnerable conditions.
