Flamengo Soccer Club Plans Museum to Make Gávea Headquarters into Tourist Site

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A new, modern and spacious home to detail 125 years of history. Flamengo soccer club, which is stacking up soccer trophies in 2019, is already working to showcase its achievements in a European-standard museum as of next year.

The club’s 125th anniversary, in November 2020, is expected to see the inauguration of an area at Gávea’s headquarters nearly seven times larger than the current one.

Directed by Mude Brasil, the company in charge of museums for Conmebol, Benfica, Juventus, Boca, River and Wembley, the project aims to convert the new Flamengo Museum into an attraction not only for fans, but a new tourist spot in Rio de Janeiro.

The new museum will cover 2,000m² exhibiting the club’s history with specific sectors for soccer and Olympic sports.

By comparison, the current museum covers only 300m². The museum will be exclusively dedicated to the achievements and soccer history on its first floor and to the memories of Olympic sports and the club’s foundation on the upper floor.

With this renovation, Flamengo expects to reach the mark of 400,000 visitors to the museum each year. Currently, despite the boom of recent achievements, the average is 5,000 visitors per month.

Against this backdrop, the club would generate up to R$10 (US$2.45) million in revenue from visits to and purchases of products at the museum.

Thousands of trophies catalogued by the historical heritage are in the process of restoration. There are also relics such as the piano where the club’s official anthem was composed over a century ago.

The project is already underway and the company in charge is also seeking sponsors to expedite the works.
