The play is freely inspired by the Mexican painter’s diary and work, an artist who has exceeded the popularity acquired through her work and which became her best art.

Frida Kahlo painted her own face a number of times in the form of an intensely self-referenced work. She dramatized her own existence, was the greatest expression of struggle and overcoming despite carrying with herself the greatest of pains – physical and existential. Instead of mourning, she dressed in colors.

According to the director, the most obvious aspects of Frida’s trajectory were excluded from the play.

“I wanted something that was not in history’s official records, that would plunge into the deepest feelings of a woman who wanted to be a mother and could not, who was fragile and, at the same time, strong and determined. We included the unpublished, what people do not even imagine, such as her relationship with doctors and the discovery of art collector Dolores Olmedo”, explains Luiz Antonio Rocha.

“In the show, we deconstructed the myth, building a human Frida, very different from the pop figure in which she was turned by the media around the world”, concludes the director.

The preparation for the staging of the play was long and included a trip to Mexico, where Luiz Antonio Rocha met the Frida he intended to stage: the painter who turned pain into art was naked to give life to the Tehuan goddess.

Directed by Luiz Antonio Rocha, performed by Rose Germano and written by the duo, the monologue, which debuted in 2014 with success as an audience and critic, returns to the poster, starting on January 17th, at the Maison de France Theater, in Rio's Centro.

In the city of Oaxaca, the director bought all the pieces that make up the costumes for the play. They are original, obtained in antique shops and indigenous artisans.

The piece opens with the prologue of Dolores Olmedo Patiño, a Marchand who owns the largest collection of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera in the world.

Responsible for preserving and spreading the couple’s collection, Dolores and Frida have never been friends; two women in love with the same man, one an art collector, the other the expression of art itself.
