Girl and Woman Shot in Morro da Mineira, Downtown Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A girl and a woman were shot on Tuesday, September 24th, in Morro da Mineira, Catumbi, Central Region of Rio de Janeiro.

Vitória C., 11 years old, was rushed to the Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital in downtown Rio. According to witnesses, she was shot in the leg while returning from school. The Municipal Health Department said her health condition is stable.

The press office of the State Police Secretariat said there was no operation involving corporation teams in Mineira on Tuesday. Also according to the police, a woman, who might also be a resident of Mineira and was not identified, was also admitted to Souza Aguiar.

Vitória is the second child to be shot in less than four days in Rio de Janeiro. If confirmed that she was shot by a stray bullet, she will be the 17th child injured in 2019; five children have been killed to date.
