Rio’s Santa Teresa Tram to Operate Again, at Reduced Capacity

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Stopped since March due to the pandemic caused by Covid-19, the iconic Bondinho de Santa Teresa (Santa Teresa Tram) will be back in operation from Monday to Sunday, between 10 AM and 4 PM; the maximum capacity per tram car is 16 passengers.

According to the note from the Secretariat, the schedule may be extended depending on demand. The trams leave from the Carioca station downtown, with destinations alternating between the Largo dos Guimarães and Dois Irmãos stations in Santa Teresa.

The wearing of masks is mandatory and the concessionaire is required to provide hand sanitizer for passengers and staff. A viral disinfection box was installed at the Carioca station, which sprays an antiseptic solution from the neck down, triggered by a presence sensor.
