Niterói and São Gonçalo Start Lockdown; Rio will Also Enforce Restrictions
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The cities of Niterói and São Gonçalo, in Greater Rio, started a lockdown of roads on Monday, May 11th, as a measure to try to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.
The lockdown of part of the city caused large traffic jams in Niterói’s access and exit avenues. Initially, the lockdown will be enforced until Friday, May 15th.

In the city of Rio de Janeiro, access to some of the main streets of the west and north zone neighborhoods should be similarly restricted this week.
By late Monday morning, Rio’s Mayor Marcelo Crivella announced partial roadblocks in the neighborhoods of Santa Cruz, Madureira, Freguesia, Taquara, Tijuca, Grajaú, Pavuna and Cascadura.
Last week, he had already ordered the sealing off of pedestrians-only streets in Campo Grande and Bangu, as they encourage dangerous agglomerations of people.
