Rio’s Mayor Accumulates Problems around City’s Public Health System
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – RJ2’s denunciation that Rio’s City Hall employees tried to block interviews and denunciations against the city’s health raised the question: what did Marcelo Crivella intend to conceal?
In over three and a half years of administration, the Mayor has accumulated several problems at the head of the public health system. Thousands of professionals were dismissed, positions were closed and the percentage of the assisted population plummeted, as disclosed by RJ2 on Tuesday, September 1st.
On several occasions, the termination of contracts with non-governmental social organizations (OSs) left the population unattended. In December, the latest serious crisis delayed transfers and employees had their wages paid late.

6,500 fewer positions
What the “Guardiões do Crivella” (Crivella’s Guardians) tried to prevent from being said on the doorstep of municipal hospitals can be observed in a survey by the Ministry of Health.
The document points out that between early 2017 and June this year, over 6,500 positions in all areas of Health were closed. The most affected were the basic health units, with 4,573 professionals dismissed.
With the dismissal, the reduction in the teams heavily affected the population. The percentage of patients assisted dropped from 70 to 39 percent.
Moreover, in the current management, the SISREG (Regulation System) waiting line hiked. At the start of his term, there were 143,000 people waiting for care. In March this year, 324,000 patients were in line – more than double.
As RJ2 reported, an elderly woman has been waiting for knee surgery for six years.
“I need to get an x-ray because I am in great pain. I got here and they don’t want to take care of me,” reported the elderly woman.
