Rio de Janeiro Recorded Heat Index of 54.8ºC on Saturday

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Those who were at Santa Cruz station, in Rio de Janeiro, around 12:45 PM on Saturday, felt as if the temperature was 54.8ºC, slightly over 130ºF. This was the Heat Index registered, on Saturday, January 11th, in the Marvelous City.

The Santa Cruz station was not the only place to register a ‘feels like’ temperature above 50ºC. The Jardim Botânico and Guaratiba neighborhoods reached this mark as well.

The heat will most likely persist, with isolated rainfall in the late afternoon.

Irajá – 42,9ºC
Botanical Garden – 48,3ºC
Barra da Tijuca – 43,6ºC
Guaratiba – 49.3ºC
Santa Cruz – 48,5ºC
Alto da Boa Vista – 41,5ºC
São Cristovão – 41ºC

What is the Heat Index?

When the temperature and humidity of the air are very high, the binding of these factors leads to the human-perceived temperature, which is usually much higher than the heat recorded in thermometers.
