RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Rio de Janeiro City Hall agents recorded 8,238 infractions for failure to wear masks for protection against Covid-19 between June and October.

This figure represents 82.71 percent of the total fines applied by municipal authorities in 139 days of inspection during the pandemic.

In total, there were 9,959 different health infractions between June 5th and October 22nd.

Of the 8,238 people fined for failing to wear masks, 7,769 were found on public streets and sidewalks and 469 were caught inside commercial establishments.

Another 403 fines were applied for crowding in establishments, including irregular waiting lines.

Overall, 8,147 fines were imposed on individuals through their CPF (individual taxpayer registry identification) and 1,812 (18 percent) on companies.

Weekend figures

Municipal inspections continued active last weekend. Between Friday evening, October 23rd and Sunday morning, traders were also notified. In all, 58 trade points, such as food trucks and children’s entertainment sites, were closed. Inspectors also notified another five bars.

Public officials found issues such as irregular use of tables and chairs, unauthorized events, and irregularly parked vehicles.

The teams were present at several points in Rio, including bars and restaurants and the South and West Zone beaches. In addition to checking compliance with health measures adopted during the Covid-19 pandemic, the city government also detected traffic violations.

The Undersecretary of Licensing, Inspection, and Urban Control was in the Centro, Vila Isabel, Barra da Tijuca, and Engenho de Dentro neighborhoods, where bars and restaurants were fined.

The Urban Control Coordination Office inspected the street trade in the Glória, Flamengo, Humaitá, Laranjeiras, Leblon, Copacabana, Lapa, and Barra da Tijuca neighborhoods, in the South zone of the city. A total of five vendors were notified.

At Alberto Torres Square alone, in Engenho de Dentro, North Zone of the city, 26 stalls, 14 food trucks, ten stands, four trampolines, and two inflatable bouncy castles were dismantled or closed.

Recommendations

According to Rio’s City Hall, during the interventions, agents advise the population on the restrictions in the current flexibilization phase.
