RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – From January 30th through February 15th, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil Rio de Janeiro (CCBB Rio) will host Asas do Tempo – Imagens de Berlim (Time Wings – Berlin Images), a special retrospective featuring a collection of films made in Berlin that depict one hundred years of German history.
To open the retrospective, on Friday January 29th at Cine Odeon – Centro Cultural Luiz Severiano Ribeiro, there will be a screening of the 1925 film, “Varieté” with live musical accompaniment provided by very special guests, Berlin DJ, Jan Brauer and the instrumental techno trio, Brandt Brauer Frick.
DJ Jan Brauer is a member of the Berlin trio Brandt Brauer Frick along with Paul Frick and Daniel Brandt. Combined, the three use classical instruments to produce techno without technology. They have released several albums, including 2013’s Miami and have performed in venues and festivals throughout the world including Coachella and the Montreux Jazz Festival.
The film the trio will be accompanying on the 29th, “Varieté” (Jealousy) is a 1925 silent film by director Ewald André Dupont. Digitally restored by the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation, the film’s plot tells the troubled love story between Huller, the trapeze artist and Berta-Marie, the dancer, and their time in the circus.
The Asas do Tempo – Imagens de Berlim retrospective, presented by the Goethe-Institut and curated by Robin Mallick and Arndt Roskens, features a total of fifteen films and two television series produced between 1920 and 2010.
The screenings are a parallel event to the ongoing “Zeitgeist Berlim – Arte da Nova Berlim” (Zeitgeist Berlin – Art in New Berlin) exhibition that is also running at the CCBB Rio through to April 4th.
In addition to “Varieté,” the retrospective includes Wim Wenders’ “Wings of Desire”; R. W. Fassibinger’s mini series “Berlin Alexanderplatz”; Doninik Graf’s mini series “In the Face of Crime” (Im Angesicht des Verbrechens); Walter Ruttmann’s “Berlin, Symphony of a Great City” (Berlin, die Sinfonie der Großstadt) and Christian Schwochow’s “Bornholmer Straße”.
Also included is Gerd Klein’s “Berlin – Schönhauser Corner” (Berlin Ecke Schönhauser); Dani Levy’s “All against Zucker” (Alles auf Zucker); Konrad Wolf’s “Solo Sunny”; Feo Aladag’s “The Foreign” (Die Fremde); Wolfgang Becker’s “Life is a construction site” (Das Leben ist eine Baustelle); Agostino Imondi and Dietmar Ratsch’s “Neukölln Unlimited”; among others.
