RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – CAIXA Cultural Rio de Janeiro will present a retrospective of the works of Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel from Tuesday, August 23rd through Sunday, September 4th. In addition to the screenings of Buñuel’s works, there will be a debate and also a masterclass with Buñuel’s grandson, filmmaker Diego Luis Buñuel.
During his over fifty-year career Luis Buñuel produced over thirty films. Well known for his surrealist works including the 1929 film, “Un Chien Andalou” (An Andalusian Dog), made with artist Salvador Dalí, Buñuel’s works spanned the genres of avant-grarde, experimental, romance, erotic, crime films, comedies, documentaries, and melodramas, among others but always managed to maintain his signature style.
Twenty of Buñuel’s works will be included in the retrospective. A screening of Buñuel’s 1972 surrealiest film “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” will open the retrospective on Tuesday, August 23rd at 6:30PM.
On the second day, Wednesday, August 24th, “Un Chien Andalou” will be screened at 5PM and a screening of Buñuel’s 1930 film “Age of Gold,” also co-directed and co-written with Salvador Dalí will follow. Luis Buñuel Diego will then host his masterclass at 6:30PM.
The retrospective’s debate will follow the 6PM screening of Buñuel’s 1977 romance/drama “That Obscure Object of Desire” on Thursday, September 1st. For the debate, film critic Leonardo Luiz Ferreira will be joined by the retrospective’s curator Sylvia Palma to discuss the impact of Buñuel’s work.
“Since his first film “Un Chien Andalou” (1929), made in partnership with the surrealist painter Salvador Dalí, filmmaker Luis Buñuel sought to open the eyes of the public, although he used a razor to it,” Sylvia Palma, the retrospective’s curator said in released statement. “His films always caused uneasiness, leading the audience to question the bourgeois order, religion, sex,and politics, the constant themes of his films.”
