The ranking, which includes 50 cities from 22 countries around the globe, shows that it’s not all about size, with lesser-known Pride festivals in mid-sized cities placing alongside the world’s largest, longest-established celebrations.

In order to rank the world’s fiercest Pride festivals, five factors were researched for hundreds of cities:

  • Travel connections
  • Year-on-year growth of the Pride festival
  • LGBTQ+ nightlife
  • LGBTQ+ laws
  • Accommodation affordability

The final shortlist comprises the 50 cities with the highest overall scores. HomeToGo used its metasearch data to determine year-on-year growth and accommodation affordability.

A leading online flight aggregator was used to compare the number of scheduled flights to each city, and online mapping tools were used to count the number of LGBTQ+ bars and nightclubs.

Pride.org provided data on laws that affect the LGBTQ+ community in each city. São Paulo struts into first place in this year’s ranking, with Mexico City and Madrid following closely in its footsteps.

The first Pride parades took place in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago in 1970.

Madrid is home to the largest Pride festival in Europe, attracting crowds of more than a million each July.

São Paulo boasts the world’s largest Pride festival. It attracts more than 3 million visitors each year.

This year’s World Pride will take place in New York City, to commemorate 50 years since the Stonewall riots.
