Magic ShowThursday’s Rio Nightlife Pick – Tonight American illusionist William Mandell returns to Gringo Café in Ipanema for a Close up Magic Show.

Scheduled to become a weekly performance at the cafe, Mandell is well known around Rio’s South Zone and West Zone.

He has performed at Barzin, Ecletico, Fasano, Cabaret Lounge, Paris6, and Star Pub, among other venues in the city. Additionally, he peformed several times previously at the Gringo Café during the venue’s recent Gringo Halloween movie screeening event series.

“We met William while he was performing at another location and invited him to participate in our Halloween event,” Sam Flowers, owner of the Gringo Café, told The Rio Times. “People really enjoyed his act and he suggested staging a weekly show.”

Known for his amazing illusions that include a R$100 bill appearing out of thin air, mind reading, and much more, Mandell’s performance promises to delight and amaze the entire family.

“He has a natural charm and really connects with the audience,” said Flowers. “His warm and fun style is a great fit for Gringo Café.”


Curta Cinema 2014
The Curta Cinema 2014 festvial continues today with free screenings of over 250 short films from 31 countries. The screenings are taking place throughout the city in venues including Estação Botafogo, Centro Cultural Justiça Federal (CCJF), Cinemaison and Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage. Curated by famous Brazilian designers, Cristiane Rosenbaum and Marcelo Rosenbaum, fair exhibitors also include Zizi Carderalli, Sergio Matos, Mercatto Casa, Heloisa Galvão, Cynthia Gavião, Evelyn Tannus, Fetiche Design, Oferenda Objetos, and Paula Mourão, among others. Panorama Festival 2014 (Centro)
Spanish choreographers Jorge Dutor and Guillem Mont de Palol will present their work “#LosMicrófonos” at 3PM and 9PM at Espaço Cultural Municipal Sérgio Porto in Humaitá and Galpão do Dirceu will again present their “RaSHa Rua” show at Oi Futuro Flamengo at 5PM as part of the ongoing 23rd edtion of the Panorama Festival.

Toninho Geraes and Marcelle Mota (Lapa)
Marcelle Mota will gets things started at 8:30PM tonight at Carioca da Gema and singer Toninho Geraes will follow at 10:30PM. Geraes has composed for artists including Martinho da Vila and Zeca Pagodinho and during his show tonight, he will sing their hits, as well as his own compositions. Additionally, he will reinterpret the works of Moacyr Luz, Paulinho da Viola, and Chico Buarque, among others.
