RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro signed this Thursday, April 25th, the decree revoking daylight saving time. The signing took place during a ceremony at the Palácio do Planalto.

The President had already announced on social media, earlier this month, his decision to end daylight saving time this year.
“After technical studies that point to the elimination of benefits due to factors such as more efficient lighting, increased energy consumption and change of habits in the population, we decided that there will be no Summer Time in the 2019/2020 season,” Bolsonaro wrote.
According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Brazil has saved at least R$1.4 billion since 2010 after adopting daylight saving time.
In Brazil, Daylight Saving Time was first instituted in the summer of 1931/1932 by President Getúlio Vargas. This trial lasted almost six months, running from October 3rd, 1931 to March 31st, 1932.
