Brazil truckers, after meeting with legislators, confirm strike on November 1

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In a videoconference meeting on Thursday, October 28, with Chamber of Deputies legislators, truckers’ representatives confirmed the maintenance of the strike scheduled for next Monday, November 1.

“We presented the agenda, we challenged Petrobras’ fuel price policy, we urged legislators to support the agendas and we reiterated the strike for November 1. The message was delivered,” reported the National Council of Road Cargo Transportation (CNTRC) chairman Plinio Dias.

Truckers presented their demands, chiefly compliance with the minimum payment for road freight, special retirement after 25 years of service and an end to Petrobras’ import parity price policy for fuels.

The meeting was organized by the Mixed Parliamentary Front of Independent and Contracted Truckers. According to the president of the front, federal deputy Nereu Crispim, more than 80 truckers’ leaders from several states of Brazil and 4 legislators attended the meeting.

Members of the administration were invited but were not present, according to the legislator. “The majority stated that there is still time for the government to try to establish a dialogue, but not with a discourse that is offensive to the workers,” Crispim said.

In the meeting, the deputy called for more dialogue and understanding from the government in relation to the worker’s demands.
