Brazil’s Senate president says Congress will not allow democratic setbacks

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco said yesterday, August 16, that the National Congress will not allow setbacks in the democratic advances achieved in Brazil.

On a social network post, Pacheco also stated that the dialogue between the government powers is crucial and called for a search for consensus.

“Dialogue between the government branches is fundamental and we must never give it up. Closing doors, knocking down bridges, arbitrarily exercising one’s own motives are a disservice to the country. Therefore, it is advisable, in this time of crisis and more than ever to seek consensus and respect differences. Patriots are those who unite Brazil, not those who want to divide it. And the democratic advances achieved are vigorously monitored by the Congress, which will not allow setbacks,” he said.

The statements came after president Jair Bolsonaro on Saturday (14) said he would request the Senate to start proceedings against Federal Supreme Court (STF) Justices Alexandre de Morais and Luís Roberto Barroso, who also chairs the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). The measure was announced on social networks.

According to the president, “for a long time, Moraes and Barroso have been extrapolating the constitutional limits with their actions.”

Earlier yesterday, Chamber of Deputies president Arthur Lira (PP-AL) posted that he will champion harmony between the powers.

“Brazil will always have in the Chamber of Deputies president a staunch constitutional advocate of harmony and independence among the branches,” he said.
