Clip of Brazilian Woman Being Helped Across Flooded Street Generates Online Storm

The video has generated over 32,000 'likes,' almost 8,000 'retweets' and almost 2,000 comments, touching upon many sensitive topics in Brazilian society such as racism, the legacy of colonialism, ageism and income inequality.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A video of a man helping an old lady across a flooded street in Rio's Copacabana neighborhood is generating enormous controversy on social media. Some commentators have been drawing comparisons with slavery, while others have been warning people not to rush to judgment.

The video shows an elderly white lady being helped onto an upturned crate by a younger black man. The man is then seen wading through the water and simultaneously placing another crate in front of the woman as she traverses the flooded street on this makeshift walkway . . .
