Coronavirus: Uruguay and Argentina lead among countries with most deaths per population

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The two countries are followed by Paraguay, Colombia and Trinidad and Tobago, according to Our World in Data website.

Uruguay on Tuesday reached 14 consecutive days in first place in the world in the average number of Covid-19 deaths in proportion to its population. The country continues to be the hardest hit with about 15 deaths per million inhabitants, according to the Our World in Data website, which collects pandemic data from all countries and territories on the planet.

Uruguay has topped the ranking of deaths by country since May 5. Prior to that, it had been in the top three for two weeks, and on that day in May it surpassed North Macedonia in terms of the number of deaths.

The top 5 on Tuesday comprised Uruguay in first place, with 15.22 deaths per day per million inhabitants in the average of the past seven days, followed by Argentina (10.94), Paraguay (10.38), Colombia (9.88) and Trinidad and Tobago (9.49).

The countries Uruguay joined at the top of the death toll list, such as Hungary and North Macedonia, have considerably lowered their number of deaths in the past two weeks. Hungary, which reached a rate of 27.8 deaths per million inhabitants on April 13, showed a rate of 7.17 deaths on Tuesday. North Macedonia, which peaked on May 2 with 17.8 deaths per million people, had 6.65 on Tuesday.

In Uruguay, one in 1,000 people died of coronavirus since the health emergency was declared on March 13. The 3,578 deaths registered by Covid-19 in a population of 3.54 million inhabitants mark this record.

Uruguay reached this death toll on Tuesday, but several other countries in the region had already reached it. In Brazil and Peru, the two countries with the worst performance in the continent in terms of deaths throughout the pandemic, more than 2 out of every 1,000 inhabitants have died from the disease.

On Tuesday, Brazil reported an average of 9.08 deaths per million inhabitants, while Peru averaged 9.09.
