Enel starts commercial operation of the first of its 5 wind farms in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Enel’s first wind farm in Brazil, with an installed capacity of 206 megawatts (MW), will be able to generate more than 966 gigawatts per hour (GWh) of energy per year, the company said.

With the entry into operation of the farm, with 49 wind turbines, the emission of more than 543,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere will be prevented, Enel added.

The farm’s full energy production will supply the free market for sale to commercial customers, leveraging Enel’s integrated presence in the country.

In addition to Cumaru, Enel Green Power Brasil (EGPB) is completing the construction of 3 other wind farms and a solar farm, all located in northeastern Brazil and totaling approximately 1.1 GW of installed capacity.

The Cumaru wind farm is located in the municipality of São Miguel do Gostoso, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, and the Enel group invested R$948 million (US$184 million) in its construction.

The project began to be built in the second half of 2020 – in full Covid pandemic – and is the first of the 5 wind farms planned by the Enel Group in Brazil.

Enel Green Power’s director in Brazil Roberta Bonomi, cited in the electricity company’s press release, said that about 1.3 GW of new installed capacity will be in operation by early 2022.

Enel energy group, parent company of Spain’s Endesa and with an important presence in Latin America, has a total renewable installed capacity of around 4 GW in Brazil, through its subsidiaries, of which more than 1.6 GW is wind energy, around 1.1 GW comes from solar sources and some 1.3 GW from hydroelectric plants.
