COP26: Paraguay presents its official position for climate change conference

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – According to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), cited in the text, Paraguay is “one of the countries with the highest share of renewable energy in South America.”

In a comparison of emissions at a global level, Paraguay emits “0.09% of total global emissions,” making it a country fully aligned with the international commitments established in the Paris Agreement, the report states.

It further specifies that primary production – agriculture, livestock and forestry – is the country’s main socioeconomic activity, contributing “up to 50% of the Gross Domestic Product” annually.

Therefore, the country seeks to strengthen the implementation of measures that safeguard and ensure resilience to climate change, and thus protect the local production model, “in order to safeguard food security, while respecting the balance of the three pillars of sustainable development.”

In this context, Paraguay is attending COP26 to debate and negotiate on agenda topics that are key to the country’s sustainable development, “with the main goal of generating coordinated and ambitious positions that contribute to the balance of multilateral negotiations on climate change,” the report explains.
