Peru surpasses 10 million vaccine doses administered to its population

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Peru has now surpassed 10 million vaccines administered to its population, mainly from Pfizer and Sinopharm, since the immunization campaign began last February, the Chief Executive announced on Thursday, July 15.

Interim president Francisco Sagasti shared on Twitter his “joy, enthusiasm and gratitude to those who made it possible to secure vaccines and their administration.”

“Their effort is rewarded with this figure that gives us #ConfidenceAndHope,” Sagasti added, after reporting the goal of 10 million doses administered.

According to the Ministry of Health, there are 3.7 million inhabitants to date who have been administered the two vaccine doses, a little over 10% of the total population, and another 6.2 million people who have been given the first dose.

Of the total number of vaccines administered, 8,059,183 were from the Pfizer laboratory, 1,293,356 from Sinopharm and 679,966 from AstraZeneca, all of them considered highly effective against Covid-19 by the World Health Organization and several international studies, the official source pointed out.

Last July 10, in the first weekend of the uninterrupted vaccination campaign in Lima, a record 252,226 doses were administered in a single day to people over 47 years of age.

The upcoming weekends in July will also see the uninterrupted vaccination campaign so that citizens may attend immunizations posts during the night or in the early hours of the morning, as there are some 200,000 people over 60 years of age who have not yet had their second dose administered.

In addition, as part of the vaccine program contracted with Pfizer, on Thursday, a shipment of 281,970 doses landed at the Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima.

To date, the pandemic has killed 194,845 people in Peru, of which 49 deaths occurred in the last 24 hours, and the number of confirmed cases rose to 2,088,143, with 1,144 new infections reported since the day before.
