RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – From January through August 2021, the Northeast state Piauí accounted for 29.1% of Brazil’s honey exports. Piauí’s competitor states in the sector, Santa Catarina and Paraná, respectively accounted for 22.8% and 20.3% of exports in the same period, the Ministry of Economy reported.
This is the first time that Piauí leads the honey export ranking in 5 years. In the first half of 2017, Piauí reported US$15.4 million in honey exports, while Santa Catarina reported US$11.3 million.
In 2018 the two states recorded quite similar export volumes (Piauí: US$9.09 million; Santa Catarina: US$9.01 million). In 2019 and 2020, Santa Catarina outperformed Piauí.
According to the Ministry of Health, honey exports yielded US$37.5 million in 2021. The value is the highest of the past 5 years for the period from January through August.
The volume represents 6.2% of all exports from Piauí. The largest export product from Piauí continues to be soybeans, which account for 81%.
Still according to the survey, Piauí rose one position in the export ranking, and is the 18th state exporting the most in 2021, having generated US$604.9 million. Piauí’s exports represent 0.3% of Brazil’s volume of exported products.
