São Paulo Mayor Bruno Covas Diagnosed with Covid-19

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Also according to the City Hall, Covas is doing well and has no symptoms of Covid-19. The Mayor, who was guided by his doctor, David Uip, to work from home and remain under observation for the next few days, released a video commenting on his diagnosis.

“After four negative results, today, unfortunately, I tested positive for Covid-19. My doctor’s advice, since I don’t have any symptoms, is to remain indoors. There is no need to take a leave of absence from the Mayor’s office as I will be able to continue to meet online through the internet, I will be able to continue working, but from home. I expect to remain here for the next ten days. I’ll keep you all updated,” said the Mayor.

Covas was hospitalized in May at the Sírio-Libanês Hospital due to abdominal discomfort. Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the Mayor was sleeping in the City Hall to avoid traveling around the city.

The Mayor is also undergoing treatment for lymph node cancer. The disease was detected in October 2019, after Covas was admitted for a skin infection treatment. Yesterday, he said that working at the City Hall and fighting the coronavirus is helping to deal with his cancer treatment.

In an interview with UOL last month, Covas also said he’s afraid of dying. “Of course [I am afraid to die]. I think everyone is afraid of death. It’s a natural fear. What worries me less is that the start of the pandemic was exactly the moment that I was getting out of chemotherapy treatment and into immunotherapy treatment. Chemotherapy lowers your immunity and places you in the risk group.”

São Paulo counts over 170,000 cases

The announcement of Covas’ positive test comes on the day that the state of São Paulo reaches 10,581 deaths by Covid-19. According to data released yesterday by the media outlet consortium, São Paulo records 172,875 confirmed cases of the disease in the state.

In total, Brazil counts 42,766 deaths from the novel coronavirus. There are 46 more deaths than the 42,720 reported by the Ministry of Health last night.

In relation to the confirmed cases, the media consortium found that there are 850,796 Brazilian victims of Covid-19. The figure is higher than the 828,810 announced by the Ministry of Health – a difference of 21,986.
