City of Bauru Confirms Death of 17 and More Than 15 Thousand Patients by Dengue

SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – The Health Department of Bauru, in São Paulo inland, confirmed on Thursday (May 2nd) five more dengue-related deaths, amounting to 17 deaths from the disease this year.

There has been an increase of 1,395 new patients compared to the previous report, totaling 15,046 positive cases. The city of 364,000 inhabitants, which is in a state of emergency due to the disease, leads the national ranking of dengue cases this year, according to the Ministry of Health.

There are still three deaths under investigation, awaiting examination results performed at the Instituto Adolfo Lutz. Since Tuesday, 30th, the application of insecticides known as “fumacê” on the streets has been suspended due to its shortage.

The Ministry of Health reported that the manufacturer was forced to recall defective lots of this insecticide resulting in momentary shortages throughout the country but ensured that supply will be stabilized. The insecticide is applied to adult insects.

Breeding control efforts in homes and public places are being maintained.
