Solar generation in Brazil expected to grow over 60% in 2021 – Ministry of Mines and Energy

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Wind power is also expected to register a significant increase, possibly reaching just over 70 TWh, representing 23% growth compared to 2020. This and other data are available in the August Monthly Energy Report from the Ministry.

Other renewable sources should see a decrease in generation in 2021. Hydroelectric power should decrease by close to 10% due to the severe drought.

In addition, biomass consumption (for industrial heat and power generation) should experience a sharp decline in the sugar and ethanol sector and a moderate decline in other agricultural activities.

Due to the significance of these two energy sources, renewable energy is expected to have a lower share in the energy and electricity matrices in 2021 as compared to 2020.

Internal Energy Supply (IEE), the energy needed to power the country’s economy, should grow 4.5% in 2021. The IEA should have a 44.4% share of renewable sources, against 48.4% in 2020. Fossil sources should grow by about 10%, mainly due to the recovery of transportation and industry, affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, and by higher thermoelectric generation, as a result of the drought that worsened in 2021.

The Monthly Energy Report is produced by the Department of Energy Information and Studies (DIE), of the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) Secretariat of Energy Planning and Development (SPE).
