Brazil’s Supreme Court Suspends City of Rio’s Debt to BNDES

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Justice Luiz Fux of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) has suspended the payment of Rio de Janeiro's debt to the Federal Government on Thursday, April 2nd.

In a request brought to the Court on Wednesday, April 1st, the Rio de Janeiro city government claims it cannot honor payments to BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) because of the measures it has been implementing to fight the novel coronavirus.

The debts were incurred with BNDES to enable works for the 2014 World Cup and the Rio 2016 Olympics.
