“The López Obrador family is fraught with corruption” – Mexico’s PAN accuses president’s brothers

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – PAN (National Action Party) senators, Mexico’s main political opposition, harshly criticized the country’s president Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his siblings, whom they described as “corrupt” after one of them, the second of whom found in such a situation, was shown receiving money in an envelope in 2015.

“First Pío López Obrador, then Felipa Obrador and now Martín López Obrador. The López Obrador family is fraught with corrupt people who should be standing before a judge, but instead enjoy the impunity granted by the president,” they pointed out on social networks on Thursday, July 8.

“We demand that the FGR (Prosecutor General’s Office) investigate the ‘Martinazo’ and that Santiago Nieto’s UIF (Financial Intelligence Unit) undertake the appropriate actions before the scandal of Martín Jesús López Obrador,” said Erandi Bermúdez, coordinator of PAN senators.

Senator Xóchitl Gálvez added to the criticism. “Oh, more contributions from the good people? Many doubts to dissipate in tomorrow’s conference: where did the money come from? What is its destination? Will an investigation be requested? ‘Martinazo’. They are not the same, they are worse,” he wrote.

For her part, PAN senators’ vice-coordinator Kenia López Rabadán was even more acidic. “This is the reality of Morena: But López Obrador HAS STOLEN MORE. Which one? Whoever, but López Obrador,” she pointed out.

The PAN parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies also questioned the case of López Obrador’s brother, disclosed by LatinUs media outlet. “How many López Obradors does it take for their corruption activities to be investigated? The president continues to cover up acts of corruption in his government, of his relatives and friends, demonstrating that this is the administration of opacity and complicity,” they asserted.

On the other hand, Mario Delgado, Morena’s national leader, the president’s party and with a majority in both houses of Congress, reacted to the video saying that it was “obscene that they want to tarnish the president.”

“When they received millions and compromised the sovereignty of the people with big companies and entrepreneurs,” he completed, being heavily criticized for endorsing the reception of cash in envelopes by Jesús Martín López Obrador.

In the video, Martín Jesús López Obrador, the Mexican president’s younger brother, can be seen receiving bundles of bills from the hand of David León Romero, once the handler of the ex-governor of Chiapas Manuel Velasco Coello.

In the footage released by LatinUs, the president’s brother can be seen receiving the money in a yellow envelope. According to the media outlet, the video dates back to 2015, when Morena, founded by López Obrador, had its first electoral participation as a party.

Thus, it is presumed that this money was used in the mid-term campaigns that year without ever being reported to the National Electoral Institute (INE), which would represent an electoral crime that for some months now has been punishable in the country with preventive imprisonment.

This deed would be the same as that denounced in relation to Pío López Obrador, another brother of the president, who was recorded receiving 150,000 pesos in cash, also from David León, allegedly for Morena’s presidential campaign in 2018, which would imply the same modus operandi.
