RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Carioca Cricket Club (CCC) is rounding off 2016 with holiday drinks at the Lord Jim pub in Ipanema starting at 8PM this Wednesday, December 14th. End-of-season awards will be handed out and there will be a mini quiz as well as a chance to look back on the past twelve months.
CCC chairman and English expatriate, Tobias Hanbury explained, “2016 was an excellent year for the CCC: even with a two-month break during the Olympics and Paralympics, we put on no less than fifteen CCC events during the year.”
He adds, “We had six epic internal CCC matches at our grounds at São Fernando Polo & Cricket Club. We hosted the National Cricket Championships in April with six teams participating, including two CCC teams. We also hosted the South American Cricket Championships in October with six men’s and three women’s teams from around the continent.”
Off the field the club is also going from strength-to-strength, as Hanbury notes some of their strictly recreational activities. “We had a sensational season launch party in February, a rowdy quiz night in June, a magnificent curry night in September, and we will have the unmissable year-end award night this Wednesday, December 14th, to bring the year to a close.”
Several of the CCC events have been held at Lord Jim’s in Ipanema, which has long been a gathering place for expatriates and anglophiles alike. Hanbury explains the draw for the club. “Lord Jim is a perfect spot for CCC events because they serve cold beer, encourage merriment, and allow us to occupy the room upstairs to contain the chaos.”
