RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Sacred Art Museum of São Paulo – MAS/SP is exhibiting the first edition of the Salão Paulista de Arte Naïf with approximately 190 works by artists from 39 cities in the Brazilian state of São Paulo.
Works created in various formats may be viewed, such as paintings, collages, drawings, watercolors, engravings, sculptures, carvings, embroidery, needlework, and modeling.
Curator Marinilda Boulay says that “the Salão Paulista de Arte Naïf seeks to map, register, experiment, value, and spread naïf art produced in the state, where each creator casts his or her look over the land of São Paulo in a free and independent form, expressing their perceptions of the world, with their peculiar shapes and colors, helping to reflect and to build a tomorrow, typical of naïf productions, filled with optimism, so needed to cope with the pandemic moment we live in.”
Curators Odécio Visintin Rossafa Garcia and Paco de Assis are jointly responsible for the event.
With the aim of promoting and publicizing São Paulo’s naïve art, the Salão Paulista de Arte Naïf pays tribute to José Antonio da Silva, one of the icons in the history of Brazilian naïve art. Among many others, one of his Vias Sacras (Via Crucis) will be on display, part of the MAS/SP collection and produced in 1967 consisting of 15 paintings.
As a posthumous tribute, it also exhibits works by artists such as Agostinho, Aparecida Azêdo, Cássio M’Boy, Djanira da Motta e Silva, Iracema Arditi, Maria Auxiliadora, Ranchinho, Raquel Trindade, and Thiê.
This first edition establishes a conceptual and material dialogue with the Sacred Art Museum of São Paulo’s collection, featuring – in addition to Silva’s Via Sacra – 28 sculptures in Pine Knot from the Paraíba Valley (19th century), sculpted by Africans and their descendants, and 10 “Paulistinhas” by Dito Pituba (19th century), which paved the way for the emergence of naïf art in São Paulo.
