Five Arrested on Child Pornography Charges in São Paulo

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Five men were arrested on Tuesday, August 13th, in four regions of the São Paulo capital, on charges of storing child pornography on computers. The arrests occurred in compliance with eight search and seizure warrants issued by the courts. Their age and identity have not been disclosed.

According to delegate Luis Renato Mendonça Davini, the police are “uninterruptedly” investigating the actions of pedophiles on the Internet. “People frequently searching for [child pornography] material, are identified and, from then on, we monitor them,” he explained.

The head of the 1st DHPP (Department of Homicide and Personal Protection) police station added that the defendants had between four and ten gigabytes of memory on their computers containing videos and photos in which children and adolescents are sexually abused.

“The profile of the five detainees is quite distinct. They are between the ages of 40 and 55 and have very different socioeconomic conditions. This type of person [pedophile] may be closer than we imagine,” he cautioned, adding that he was unable to provide further details on the prisoners, due to the ongoing investigation.

Davini further said that the investigations were ongoing indefinitely. “The Civil Police are attentive and will always monitor this type of crime so that we can repress it and prevent it from continuing,” he said.

According to the police, the arrests took place in the defendants’ homes in the central region, as well as in the north, east, and west zones of the São Paulo capital. This is the second stage of the operation “Basta de Pedofilia” (Enough of Pedophilia).

GREATER SÃO PAULO

On June 26th this year, eight people were arrested on charges of child pornography in Guarulhos and Mairiporã, both in Greater São Paulo, in the first stage of operation Basta de Pedofilia. At the time, there were ten search and seizure warrants issued by the courts.

The police said that of the eight arrests, six were for storing pornographic material involving children and adolescents, and two for sharing the content.
