Police Arrest Suspect of Setting Fatal Fire on São Paulo Street Dweller
SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – The Civil Police arrested in the early hours of this Wednesday, January 8th, the suspect of setting fire to a street dweller last Sunday, January 5th, in the Mooca neighborhood, eastern zone of São Paulo. The victim died a day later.
According to the police, the court has accepted the warrant for the temporary arrest of the accused. The police used images from monitoring cameras, in addition to witness recognition, to identify the suspect.
The man is accused of pouring inflammable liquid and then setting fire to the product, which hit street dweller Carlos Roberto Vieira da Silva, 39, who slept under the marquee of a supermarket on Celso Azevedo Marques street.
According to the Secretariat of Public Security of São Paulo, the victim was found conscious and told the police he did not know who set the fire because he was sleeping at the time of the attack.
Silva was rescued and referred to the Municipal Hospital of Tatuapé, where he could not resist the injuries and died on Monday morning, January 6th. He suffered second and third degree burns all over his body.
