Vehicle Rotation Returns to São Paulo after Holiday Period

SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – Adopted on working days, the system of rotating cars and trucks in the capital city of São Paulo came into effect again yesterday morning, January 13th. As established by the Traffic Engineering Company (CET), in the Peak Time Operation, vehicles are prohibited from traveling one day of the week, from 7 AM to 10 AM and from 5 PM to 8 PM. The date is determined by their registration plates.

The purpose of the rotation is to avoid traffic congestion. In the rotation system, access to the expanded city center, which is circumscribed by the innermost ring road, is restricted.

On Mondays, the rule applies to vehicles with plates ending in 1 and 2. On Tuesdays, plates ending in 3 and 4. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the impediment applies to plates finishing in 5 and 6 and 7 and 8, respectively. On Fridays, the measure covers plates ending in 9 and 0.

The current rotation allows motorcycles, taxis, school transport vehicles and tow trucks, among others, to travel freely. The complete list can be viewed on the official website. FAQs are also answered on the CET page.

The following are the streets where access is restricted:

Marginal of Tietê River, between Salim Farah Maluf Avenue and Marginal of Pinheiros River; Marginal of Pinheiros River, from Marginal of Tietê River to Bandeirantes Avenue; Afonso D’Escragnole Taunay Avenue, throughout the whole extension; Maria Maluf Road Complex, throughout the whole extension; Presidente Tancredo Neves Avenue, throughout the whole extension; Avenida das Juntas Provisórias, throughout the whole extension; Great São Paulo Viaduct, throughout the whole extension; Avenida Professor Luís Ignácio de Anhaia Melo, between Great São Paulo Viaduct and Salim Farah Maluf Avenue; Salim Farah Maluf Avenue, throughout the whole extension.
