Former São Paulo Governor Alckmin Charged with Corruption and Money Laundering
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The ex-governor of São Paulo, Geraldo Alckmin, was charged on Thursday, July 16th, by the Federal Police as part of an investigation under Operation Lava Jato that investigates an alleged cartel in the São Paulo Subway and Rodoanel (ring road).

In addition to Alckmin, two other men were arrested on suspicion of having committed the crimes of passive corruption, electoral misrepresentation, and money laundering, subject to sentences of three to 12 years in prison.
In addition to using a plea bargain, the Federal Police operation also found evidence in the Odebrecht Group’s computer systems and analyzed telephone records, documents, and phone calls.
“Although I have not been heard, not even heard, I will provide explanations. My campaigns, both in 2010, 2014, now in 2018, were strictly within the law,” Alckmin told CNN Brasil.
Questioned by R7, the PSDB (Social Democracy Party) commented on the case through its national president, Bruno Araújo: “Governor of São Paulo four times, almost five decades of public life, a doctor, Geraldo Alckmin has always led a modest life and dedicated to public service. He is a reference of correction and righteousness in public life. He has the full confidence of the PSDB.”
