Downpour in São Paulo Causes Flooding of Rivers and Fallen Trees

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The heavy downpour that affected the capital of São Paulo on Tuesday, December 10th, caused the flooding of streams and rivers, trees crashing and increased traffic jams.

In Itaquera, in the eastern zone of São Paulo, the Verde river overflowed as a result of the heavy rainfall that affected the neighborhood. In Perus, in the northern region, the Perus Creek flooded, as well as in Tremembé, in the same region, where the Paciência Creek overflowed.

The city’s Emergency Management Center (CGE) declared a state of alert in all three locations. The remaining areas of the city are under a state of attention.

The Fire Department reported that there were 15 occurrences of flooding in the city and 13 calls due to fallen trees.

According to the Traffic Engineering Company (CET), the traffic jam at 7 PM involved 13.8 percent of the monitored roads, above the average for the time (ten percent).

At 7 PM, CGE meteorological radar imagery showed moderate rainfall throughout the São Paulo capital.

According to the GCE forecast, rainfall will persist in the next few hours, gradually decreasing in intensity and scope.
