São Paulo Restrictions: Non-essential Activities Close Nights and Weekends; School Reopening Delayed

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Non-essential services may only operate until 8 PM during the week, and on Saturdays and Sundays will not open. Back to school is deferred to February 8th.

The Red Phase rules of the fight against the coronavirus are in force in all São Paulo state cities. At present, bars and restaurants must close at 8 PM, as well as shopping malls and street stores. Gyms and beauty salons are also required to close at this time. The measure is in force until February 8th.

On weekends, only essential services such as supermarkets, pharmacies, gas stations and auto garages may conduct business. Shopping malls and stores will remain closed. For bakeries, only take out food is allowed. Restaurants and bars may also open exclusively for delivery.

The state government also released the new back-to-school calendar. Schools should reopen on February 8th; the initial plan was to resume teaching on Monday, February 1st.

The Health Secretariat will continue to monitor the progress of Covid in the state. If need be, new measures could be implemented. São Paulo state now totals over 1.7 million cases and 51,500 deaths.
