São Paulo subway workers suspend strike, accept Labor Court proposal
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The São Paulo subway workers, on strike since midnight yesterday, May 19, decided in a meeting at the end of the night to accept the 2nd Regional Labor Court (TRT) conciliation proposal, and reject the Metropolitan Company’s (Metro) proposal, thus suspending the strike. Subway workers are to return to work immediately.
The TRT’s proposal was presented on Wednesday afternoon in a virtual conciliation hearing held by the court, with the participation of Metro representatives and employees.
Among other items, the TRT proposed a wage readjustment of 7.79% in meal and food vouchers; and the payment of a wage bonus, to be settled on March 31, 2022, equivalent to the normative floor of the subway workers category in force in March 2022 for all employees.
Metro refused the TRT’s proposal and offered a new suggestion, which was rejected last night by the subway workers. Of the 3,274 category assembly participants, 3,064 (93.5%) approved the TRT’s proposal, 2,633 (80.4%) rejected the Metro’s and 2,488 (75.9%) agreed to suspend the strike.
