Brazil makes Latin America’s first ‘real’ 5G video call using Nokia technology

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro and the Minister of Communications Fábio Faria made the first “real” 5G video call in Latin America on Friday morning, April 9.

The call was made in the standalone and end-to-end format, i.e., from an entirely new network dedicated only to next-generation mobile connectivity data traffic.

Finnish Nokia collaborated for the test for this first connection. Faria was in Nokia’s headquarters in São Paulo while Bolsonaro answered the 5G videocall at the Planalto Palace in Brasilia.

The minister also displayed an example of the brand’s 5G antenna, which is smaller and more economical than current equipment.

5G has no date to be implemented in the country yet. Still, the Anatel board recently approved the public notice for the auction of frequencies, and the minister pledges to implement at least 20 connection points in 2021.

Other equipment manufacturers should perform similar demonstrations to the government soon.

5G technology will be available in all Brazilian capitals by July 2022. The public notice for the 5G auction bid was approved on February 25th by the National Telecommunications Agency (ANATEL) Board of Directors, which has also decided on the mandatory adoption of standalone 5G, which will require the implementation of a network independent from the current 4G set-up. The notice will now be analyzed by the Federal Audit Court (TCU).
